“MANGO”is the national fruit of India. Mango is a fleshy, oval , yellowish-red tropical fruit which is eaten ripe or used green for pickles or chutneys. Mangoes are perennial plants ; they are an evergreen tree and can reach up to 15-30 m in height and may develop an evergreen dome-shaped canopy. Mangoes grow well in a warm, frost-free climate with dry winters. Mango is one of the most extensively exploited fruits for food, juice, flavor, fragrance and color, making it a common ingredient in new functional foods often called super fruits. Mangoes are rich in vitamin A,C and D. There are over 100 varities of mangoes in India with various range of colors, sizes and shapes. It has been cultivated in India since time immemorial. Alphonso mangoes are the best and widely consumed by Mumbaikars. It is variously known as Alphonso, Hapus, Hapoos, Bombay variety, etc., this variety is often considered to be a king even amongst the“King of fruits”and is widely considered to be the tastiest fruit in India.
Alphonso famously known as Hapoos in Marathi is a seasonal mango cultivar that is considered as one of the best in terms of sweetness, richness and flavor.Alphonso Mangoes originated in Ratnagiri can be easily available in Mumbai.Alphonso Mangoes are oval in shape and about 4 to 6 inches long. The skin of the ripe fruit is golden yellow in colour, but is inedible. It has a thin firm skin and a delicious pulp. The stone or seed is smaller than many varieties of mangoes and the yield of pulp is therefore much more than in many varieties. Many have tried planting cultivars of this farmed variety in other parts of the world, but have not been able to match the original flavour of the Alphonso variety grown in the Ratnagiri District in the volcanic soil of this coastal zone. The best and most expensive are grown on the small plantation in Ratnagiri and are hand-harvested. It is this variety that’s most widely exported.
